Für einen meiner Sammler, der schon alle Bildtypen von mir hat, ausgewählt nach dem Prinzip des Möglichst- Anders, denke ich mir wieder etwas aus, was ihm noch fehlen könnte, und diesmal wird es eine Schafherde. Auf dem Bild, das bald ihm gehörte, waren zwanzig Schafe, wobei ihm eines mit weniger Schafen lieber gewesen wäre. Ich hatte ja nicht wissen können, dass er selber eine echte Schafherde hat, die sich stark vermehrt, und er findet seine eigene Herde schon zu groß. Wieder in meinem Atelier, malte ich eine weitere Schafherde mit nur sieben Schafen, die ich ihm beim nächsten Treffen vielleicht als Umtausch vorschlagen werde.

For one of my clients, who already has paintings of all kinds that I paint, I start to think of the category of the as different as possible paintings to create. This time my choice falls on a flock of sheep. The painting contained a flock of twenty sheep, which were too much for the taste of my client. I was unaware of the fact that he already owns a flock of sheep that keeps on reproducing heavily. Back in my studio, I painted a flock of sheep with only seven individuals, which I will offer him as a replacement.

Per uno dei miei collezionisti che ha già tutti i tipi di quadri fatti finora, secondo il criterio del più diverso possibile, mi faccio venire in mente qualcosa che gli potrebbe ancora mancare, e questa volta sarà un gregge di pecore. Sul quadro, che presto era diventato suo, c’erano 20 pecore, anche se ne avrebbe preferito uno con meno pecore. Come facevo a sapere che lui stesso possedeva un gregge che cresceva velocemente e che trovava troppo grande. Di ritorno nello studio ho dipinto un altro gregge con sole 7 pecore, che al nostro prossimo incontro gli avrei proposto in cambio.
