fwbd6,30, Borgo San Giovanni. Öl auf Leinwand, 70 x 100 cm. Vor dem Wegfahren nahm ich das Adresszettelchen zur Hand, der „Borgo San Giovanni, 626“ lag an unserer Ausfahrtstraße. „Borgo“ ist eine spezielle Bezeichnung für eine Straße in der Peripherie einer Stadt, außerhalb des Stadttores, aber auf dem Plan von Chioggia bezeichnet Borgo die ganze Insel mit dem Badestrand. In dem Geschäft mit der Hausnummer 626 gab es wirklich allen Küchengerätezubehör, den man sich nur denken kann. Ich bekam dort auch meine passenden Geschirrkorbrollen, und denke seither bei jeder Verwendung meines Geschirrspülers an die geistig vernetzen Geschäfte in Chioggia.

The “Borgo San Giovanni, 626“ was on the exit we were going to take. “Borgo“ is an expression for a road in the surrounding of a city outside the city wall. On the map of Chioggia, Borgo represents the whole island including its beach. The shop with the house number 626 had more household items than one could possibly imagine. And luckily I also got the rolls of the dishwasher basket at this shop. Whenever I use my dish washer, I think of this place.

Il Borgo San Giovanni 626 si trovava sulla nostra strada. „Borgo“ è il nome di un quartiere di periferia di una città, fuori le mura, ma sulla pianta di Chioggia „Borgo“ indica tutta l’isola con la spiaggia. Nel negozio col numero 626 avevano veramente tutti gli accessori possibili e immaginabili per la cucina. Ci trovai anche le rotelle giuste per le ceste della mia lavastoviglie, e da allora, tutte le volte che carico la mia lavastiviglie mi viene da pensare al collegamento spirituale dei negozi di Chioggia.

fwbd6,25, Treppenmalerei, drei Stiegen, Öl auf Karton, 30 x 40 cm, Da bin ich wieder. Nach der Rückkehr, führe ich, nach den Landschaftsdurchgängen, meine früheren Treppenmalereien wieder weiter, während ich an die Stufen und Treppenbrücken dachte, die wir in den wenigen Tagen zurückgelegt hatten. Ich hatte an dem Tag in Venedig wirklich die Stufen auf unserem Weg gezählt, die Zahl am selben Abend, da ich sie notieren wollte, aber wieder vergessen.

After my return, I start to carry out the painting of steps after some landscape paintings, while thinking of the many steps we passed on our trip. I’ve actually counted the number of steps on our way through Venice, but forgot the number before I could write it down.

Dopo il mio ritorno e dopo aver dipinto tanti paesaggi, continuo il mio lavoro ai quadri sulle scale, pensando a tutte le scale e i ponti gradinati che avevamo fatto in pochi giorni. Avevo veramente contato i gradini lungo la nostra strada, ma la sera, quando volevo scrivere il numero, me ne ero scordata.

fwbd6,24, Venedig, Rialto, Öl auf Leinwand, 50 x 70 cm, 2017. Zum x-ten Mal male ich die Rialtobrücke, und eigentlich sehr gerne. Ich habe sie zum ersten Mal vor mehr als dreißig Jahren für eine Arbeitskollegin auf Bestellung angefertigt, und im Laufe der Zeit oft und oft, sodass ich sagen kann, ohne hin und wieder die Rialtobrücke zu malen, könnte ich ja gar nicht existieren. Dennoch durchbrechen die „Hauptplätze“ vorübergehend meine Nischen, in denen ich mich wohler fühle.

More than thirty years ago, I’ve seen it for the first time, where I painted it for a colleague. Within the years I’ve painted it so often that one could say that I wouldn’t exists without painting the rialto bridge from time to time. Still the main square disrupt my comfort zone.

fwbd6,24, Venezia, Rialto, olio su tela, 50 x 70 cm, 2017. L’ennesima volta dipingo il Ponte di Rialto, e devo dire con grande piacere. La prima volta lo dipinsi 30 anni fa su commissione per una collega di lavoro, e molto spesso negli anni successivi. Quindi posso dire tranquillamente che senza dipingere ognittanto il Ponte di Rialto non potrei esistere. Ma per un certo periodo i „posti principali“ interrompono le nicchie che sono più di mio gradimento.

fwbd6,23, Quergasse in Blau und Grün, 2, Öl auf Karton und Holz, 42 x 52 cm, 2016. Wegen des geplanten Tagesausfluges nach Venedig war ich in Sorge. Die Tierärztin hatte vor dem Wegfahren gemeint, Ginas Humpeln käme von der Abnützung ihrer Wirbelsäule und werde sich wohl nicht mehr bessern. Ich entschied, trotzdem zu fahren und nach dem Parken des Autos den Fußweg von der Piazzale Roma Richtung Zentrum zu gehen, soweit wir eben kommen und notfalls gleich vor oder nach der ersten Treppe in irgendein Café einzukehren, dort zu sitzen und zu schauen, bis die Langeweile mich vertreibt. Ich muss ja nicht jedesmal zum Markusplatz gehen.

Just before I left, the vet told me that Gina’s limping was caused by the abrasion of her spine. I decided to go anyway with the option of going into the first café after parking the car and walking along the Piazzale Roma in the direction of the center. There I could sit and observe until boredom would guide me. I don´t always have to go to St. Mark’s square.

fwbd6,23, Traversa in Blu e Verde, 2, olio su cartone e legno, 42 x 52 cm, Ero preoccupata per la programmata gita a Venezia. Prima di partire da casa, la veterinaria aveva detto che lo zoppicare di Gina era dovuto all’ usura della colonna vertebrale e molto probabilmente non sarebbe migliorato. Decisi di andarci lo stesso e di percorrere a piedi la strada da Piazzale Roma, dove avevo intenzione di parcheggiare la macchina, verso il centro finchè ce l’avrebbe fatta e poi eventualmente fermarci a qualche bar, stare sedute a guardare, aspettando che la noia ci avrebbe spinto avanti. Non devo mica arrivare tutte le volte a San Marco.

fwbd6,22, Chioggia, Calle San Domenico, links, Öl auf Leinwand, 22 x 80 cm, Nur auf einer Seite des Kanals ist ein Gehsteig, auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite sind die Häuser direkt am Wasser. Entlang des Kai gibt es kleine alte Geschäfte. Eines davon führte verschiedene Haushaltsartikel, Fischeri- Zubehör und undefinierbaren Krimskrams. Dort fragte ich, ob sie zufällig Rollen für den Korbeinsatz eines Geschirrspülers hätten. Das nicht, aber der Verkäufer konnte mir genau sagen, wo ich in Chioggia so etwas bekäme, und er blätterte auf seinem Notebook mit Google Earth den Standort des für mich passenden Geschäftes auf und zeigte mir, wie die Fassade aussah und schrieb mir die Adresse auf einen kleinen Zettel.

Alongside the kai there are a number of small old shops. One of them sells household articles, fishing supplies and undefinable odds and ends. There I asked if they have those small rolls for the basket of a dishwashing machine. They didn´t, but the owner could tell me exactly where in Chioggia I could get those. And he showed me the exact location of the store on his notebook and described the facade while writing the address onto a small piece of paper.

fwbd6,22, Chioggia, Calle San Domenico, a sinistra, olio su tela, 22 x 80cm, 2016. Solo da una parte del canale c’è un marciapiede, dall’alta  arte le case sono direttamente sull’acqua. Lungo il molo ci sono vecchi negozietti. Uno vendeva diversi articoli per la casa, attrezzi per la pesca e altra roba non specificabile. Chiesi se per caso avessero le rotelle per le ceste della mia lavastoviglie. Purtroppo no, ma il negoziante era in grado di indicarmi dove trovarle a Chioggia. Accese il suo tablet e su google earth trovò la posizione esatta del negozio che faceva per me e mi fece vedere anche la facciata e mi scrisse l’indirizzo su un foglietto di carta.

fwbd6,20, Chioggia, Sonnenschirme, Öl auf Leinwand, 50 x 70 cm, 2015. Die Sonnenschirme auf dem Strand von Chioggia sind rein fiktiv. Da waren wir am vierten Tag unseres Aufenthalts auf einem anderen Inselabschnitt, der östlich vom zentralen Kanal Vena liegt. An dem Tag war plötzlich Badewetter, und ich musste für Gina mit meiner Jacke einen Sonnenschutz bauen. Einige der Strandbars hatten schon sommerlichen Betrieb und extralaute Musik.

On our fourth day of the trip we´ve been to a part of the island east of the central Canal Vena. On this day we unexpectedly had bathing weather and I had to build a sun protection for Gina with my jacket. Some of the beach bars were already open and had their music turned on full volume.

fwbd6,20, Chioggia, Ombrelloni, olio su tela, 50 x 70 cm, 2015. Gli ombrelloni sulla spiaggia di Chioggia sono puramente fittizi. Il quarto giorno del nostro soggiorno stavamo in un’altra parte dell’isola, a est del canale centrale Vena. Quel giorno il tempo invitava a fare il bagno e dovetti costruire un parasole per Gina con la mia giacca. Alcuni bar lungo la spiaggia erano in pieno modo estivo con musica ultraforte.

fwbd6,14, Pila, Öl auf Leinwand, 70 x 70 cm, 2016. Aus der gewünschten Kaffeepause im nächstbesten Dorf wurde nichts, weil das einzige Lokal, das wir in Pila sahen, geschlossen hatte. Es waren nirgends Menschen zu sehen. Im Weiterfahren kamen wir zu einer Firma, die in einem blauen Container untergebracht war, mit einem großen besetzten Parkplatz rundherum, ohne einen einzigen Freiraum, nur hin und herfahrende LKWs auf zwei sich kreuzenden Schotterstraßen.

fwbd6,14, Pila, oil on canvas, 70 x 70 cm, 2016. Because the only café we found in Pila was closed we had to do without our desired coffee break. Not a single person was on the street. When continuing without a coffee we  assed a company that was housed within a blue container surrounded by a big parking place packed with cars. The only sign of life were two big trucks moving along crossing gravel roads.

fwbd6,14, Pila, olio su tela, 70 x 70 cm, 2016. La tanto desiderata pausa caffè nel prossimo paese non si fece, perchè l’unico baretto di Pila era chiuso. Non c’era anima viva. Proseguendo trovammo una ditta che resiedeva in un container blu, con un grande parcheggio strapieno tutto intorno, senza spazio libero, solo un viavai di camion su 2 strade di ghiaia che si incrociavano.

fwbd6,12, Adria, Ziellose Gasse, 2, Öl auf Leinwand, 40 x 58 cm, 2016. In der Höhe der Tafel bog ich in die nächste Seitengasse, an deren Ende ich zu einer breiteren, belebten Straße kam, mit einigen kleinen Geschäften und einem Postamt, und ein paar Schritte weiter gab es ein riesiges Bankgebäude. Die Fassaden dort waren in einheitlichem Ocker mit rotbraunen Balken, also wieder so, wie sie sich, sobald ich von dort weg bin, in meinem Gedächtnis in bunte Farben verwandeln.

The façade was painted in ochre with red brownish beams. As I leave the place they turn into colourful memories.

All’altezza del cartello imboccai la prossima traversa, in fondo alla quale giunsi a una strada più larga e frequentata, con alcuni negozietti e un ufficio postale e alcuni passi più in là c’era una banca. Le facciate si presentavano tutte in color ocra con travi color marrone rossiccio, quindi proprio così come nella mia memoria si trasformano in colori variopinti appena girato l’angolo.

 

fwbd6,07, Isola Verde. Vorsaison, 1. Öl auf Leinwand, 38 x 55 cm, 2016. Auf der Suche nach ruhigen malerischen Plätzen, brauche ich mich hinterher ja nicht zu wundern, wenn dort nichts ist, außer Salatpflanzenplantagen im Einzugsgebiet. Es war die Woche vor der Osterwoche, und die kleine Insel war mit Tafeln markiert, die sich auf sommerliches Baden und Campieren beziehen. Dort gibt es viele Ferienbungalows, die voneinander abgezäunt sind und asphaltierte Gehwege dazwischen, die zum Sandstand führen. Es waren mehrere arbeitende Männer dabei, mit einem Wasserschlauch eine Terrasse zu reinigen. Ich spazierte mit Gina durch eines der offenen Tore, fragte laut, ob wir da zum Strand gehen dürften, und sie winkten uns freundlich herein. Ich ließ Gina ins Wasser, und testete mit meinem rechten Fuß wie kalt es war, bevor ich ihn ganz schnell wieder zurückzog.

fwbd6,07, Isola Verde, Preseason, 1. Oil on canvas, 38 x 55 cm, 2016. On the lookout for calm picturesque places, I shouldn´t be surprised when I end up in lettuce plantations. It was the week before Easter and the small island was marked with signs that were related to bathing and camping during summer. A number of holiday bungalows, separated by fences and asphalted walkways lead to the beach. A bunch of men were cleaning the terrace with a water hose. Together with Gina I walked through one of the open gates and asked loudly for the permission to pass. The men waved us through with a friendly smile. Gina went into the water while I tested the water temperature with my right foot, quickly pulling back after first contact.

fwbd6,07, Isola Verde. Bassa stagione, olio su tela 38 x 55 cm, 2016. In cerca di posticini tranquilli e pittoreschi non c’è da stupirsi se poi non si trovano che piantagioni di insalata in periferia. Era la settimana prima della Settimana Santa, e la piccola isola era piena di indicazioni riguardo a spiagge e campeggi in estate. Ci sono molti bungalow, ben divisi l’uno dall’altro da delle staccionate e striscie asfaltate portano alla spiaggia. Alcuni uomini stavano pulendo una terrazza con una sistola. Io entrai con Gina da uno dei cancelli aperti chiedendo se era possibile arrivare fino alla spiaggia e molto gentili ci fecero segno di sì. Sciolsi Gina che entrò nell’acqua ma quando testai la temperatura con il piede destro, lo ritirai immediatamente.
