    fwbd7,12, Parallel zu meinen malerischen Rückblicken repariere und bearbeite ich Bilder, die Spuren von Ausstellungen und Transporten aufweisen und die ich in der Folge gleich um eine ganze Schicht übermale. Im Allgemeinen achte ich darauf, dass der Malgrund nicht zu viel Gewicht hat, denn ich will mehrere Bilder gleichzeitig leicht tragen können. Diesmal hatte ich aber nur eine dickere Holzplatte mit einem gewissen Eigengewicht zur Hand. Als Kontrast zu dem Gewicht sollte der Inhalt des Bildes möglichst leicht aussehen, mit großzügigen Spachtelstrichen und die Treppenkanten nur angedeutet.

Parallel to my painted retrospectives, I have been repairing and changing pictures that show traces of exhibitions and transports and have then painted a layer over them. In generally, I make sure that the material I paint on, isn’t too heavy, because I want to be able to easily carry several pictures at the same time. This time I only had a thick wooden board on hand, which was rather heavy. In contrast to the weight, the content of the picture should be as light as possible, with generous strokes of the spatula and the edges of the stairs only indicated.

    fwbd7,12. Imperfezioni Superficiali, olio su legno, 35 x 53 cm. Rivisito il passato dipingendo e contemporaneamente riparo e rifaccio  quadri che mostrano tracce di mostre e trasporti e ai quali conferisco un altro strato di colore. Di solito cerco di evitare uno sfondo troppo pesante, visto che vorrei poter portare con facilità piu`quadri in una volta. Questa volta però  avevo a portata di mano solo una tavola abbastanza spessa di un certo peso. In contrasto al peso, il contenuto dell’immagine sarebbe dovuto sembrare leggero, a pennellate generose, con i bordi dei gradini appena accennati.

    fwbd7, 34,Via Platina in Cremona, Öl auf Leinwand, 38 x 60 cm. Auf der Suche nach der Via Giovanni Maria Platina, im Dezember 2017, führte der Navigator uns in eine unbeleuchtete Straße, in der ich nur Fassaden ohne Eingänge wahrgenommen habe. Dass wir den Straßennamen mit dem Vorspann Giovanni Maria in den Navigator eingetippt hatten, führte uns zu einem unbeleuchteten Straßeneck in Cremona. Von dort lotste uns der Quartiergeber telefonisch in die richtige Straße, die so unmittelbar neben dem Dom ist, dass die Suche aus dem Hinterher ganz lächerlich war.

Looking for Via Giovanni Maria Platina, in December 2017, the navigator guided us to an unlit street in which I saw only facades without entrances. The fact that we had typed the names „Giovanni Maria“, had led us to that dark corner. From there, the host directed us by telephone to the right street, which was so close to the cathedral that looking for it seemed quite ridiculous in retrospect.

Alla ricerca di Via Giovanni Maria Platina, nel dicembre del 2017, il navigatore satellitare ci guidò in una stradina buia, dove c’erano solo facciate senza portoni.  Il fatto di aver inserito anche Giovanni Maria, ci condusse a un angolo scuro di Cremona. Da lì il nostro oste ci guidò nella via giusta, che era talmente vicino al Duomo, che la ricerca sembrava ridicola.

    fwbd7,41,Fruehstueck bei Cesare,2,Öl auf Leinwand, 40x40cm. Die „Casa i Liutai“ ist so elegant, wie die anderen Bauten in der Via Platina. Unser Zimmer hatte in der Außenwand in Kniehöhe ein rundes Loch mit einem Durchmesser von fünfzehn Zentimetern, vermutlich zu Lüftungszwecken für die Gasheizung. Da zogen Kälte und Lärm herein, dass ich Gina mit ihrer Decke und mit meinem Mantel zudeckte, aber trotzdem in der Nacht mehrmals mit ihr hinausmusste. Meine Eintragungen, die ich mir zu den Straßennamen gemacht hatte, sind aufgrund der Kälte in so eckiger Schrift, dass ich sie nicht mehr lesen kann.

In our room, at knee-height in the outer wall, there was a round hole, about fifteen centimetres in diameter, presumably for ventilation for the gas heating. Cold and noise found their way into our room, and I covered Gina with her blanket and my coat, but still I had to go out with her several times during the night. I took notes concerning the street names but due to the cold, my writing was so awkward that I can’t read them any more.

    fwbd7,41. Colazione da Cesare, 2, olio su tela, 40 x 40 cm. La „ Casa Il Liutaio“ è elegante quanto gli altri palazzi di Via Platina. Nel muro esterno della nostra stanza c’era un buco dal diametro di ca. 15 cm, probabilmente una presa d’aria per il riscaldamento a gas. Però entravano freddo e chiasso. Coprivo Gina con la sua coperta e il mio cappotto ma malgrado ciò l’ho dovuta portare fuori più volte la notte. Il freddo e quindi le mie dita indirizzite hanno reso  illeggibili i miei appunti riguardo alle strade percorse.

    fwbd7,02, Während der Sommermonate war ich an sehr vielen Tagen lange damit beschäftigt, meine immer sturer werdende alte Gina aus ihrer Liegeposition auf dem schmuddeligen Boden im Stiegenhaus in die Wohnung zu bringen. Ich konnte mich nicht konzentrieren, wenn die Haustür offen war, weil ein vorbeigehender Hund dann doch einen plötzlichen Energieanfall mit Hinterherlaufen ausgelöst hätte. Irgendwann gelang es mir wieder, sie in die Wohnung zu locken.

On many days during the summer months, it took up quite some time to get my increasingly stubborn old dog Gina to get up from the dirty floor of the stairwell and to move into the apartment. I couldn’t concentrate with the front door open, because a passing dog would have triggered a sudden burst of energy in my dog and she would have run after it. At some point I managed to lure her into the apartment.

Durante i mesi estivi  passavo molto tempo ogni giorno a convincere la mia vecchia Gina, sempre più cocciuta, ad alzarsi dal lurido pavimento sotto le scale ed entrare nell’appartamento. Non riuscivo a concentrarmi con il portone aperto perchè ogni cane che passava poteva provocare un inaspettato attacco di energia in Gina e finire con una rincorsa da parte mia. Prima o poi riuscivo a farla entrare in casa.

Warum wir aber mit einer halben Stunde Verspätung ankamen, kann ich mir selber erst am Nachmittag mit Hilfe des Plans in der Ruhe des Hotelzimmers erklären. Um zwölf Uhr waren wir jedenfalls in der Via del Porcellana, wo die Veranstalterin uns im Ankommen, zusammen mit den vor der Tür Versammelten gleich in die Galerie hineinführte. Nach den Ansprachen fragte mich die Galeristin, wo ich denn meine Bilder gelassen hätte. Im Auto vor dem Hotel, das diesmal ein weit entferntes ist, nahe am Flughafen. Bei meiner Anmeldung hatte ich wählen können, ob ich mit Fotos oder mit den Originalen teilnehme. Ich hatte die Version mit den Fotos angekreuzt, aber in Kombination mit „persönlich anwesend“, was bedeutet, dass man die gerahmten Fotos gegen die persönlich mitgebrachten Originale austauschen kann. Meine Bilder sind nicht schwer, aber doch sperrig, und ich hatte mich auf dem Hotel-Parkplatz stehend, spontan für die bequemere Version entschieden.

I could only understand with the help of the map, in the privateness of the hotel room in the afternoon, why we had arrived half an hour late. At twelve a clock we arrived in Via del Porcellana where the gallery owner led us into the gallery, together with the people gathered in front of the door. After the speeches, the gallery owner asked me where I had left my paintings. They were in the car, in front of the hotel, which was located outside the centre, close to the airport. When I had filled in the application form for the exhibition, there had been the option whether to take part with photos or with the originals. I had ticked the photos, but also that I would be present in person, which meant that I could replace the framed photos by the originals. My pictures are not heavy, but they are very bulky, and in the morning, I spontaneously decided on the more comfortable version.

    fwbd7,21. Via del Porcellana, 3, olio su tela, 50 x 70 cm. Il nostro ritardo di buoni 30 minuti riesco a spiegarmelo solo il pomeriggio, nella pace della nostra camera con la pianta in mano. In ogni caso alle ore 12 ci trovammo in Via Del Porcellana dove l’organizzatrice ci salutò e ci fece entrare insieme agli altri partecipanti nella galleria d’arte.  Dopo il discorso di inaugurazione la gallerista mi chiese dove fossero rimasti i miei quadri. Nella mia macchina, davanti all’albergo, che questa volta si trova molto lontano, vicino all’aeroporto.  Quando mi ero iscritta potevo scegliere se partecipare con foto o quadri originali. Avevo optato per la versione  foto, in combinazione con „presente personalmente“, il che significa che volendo, all’arrivo si potevano sostituire le foto con gli originali. I miei quadri non sono pesanti ma piuttosto ingombranti e quindi avevo optato per la versione più comoda.

Mit meinen Vollmondlandschaften hatte ich über viele Jahre eine Pause eingelegt, bevor es mich jetzt wieder freut, solche zu malen. Statt meiner gedämpften Grüntöne, verwende ich diesmal Hellblau, weil ich gerade viel Weiß und wenig Blau auf meiner Palette habe, Farbreste, die ich verbrauchen will, bevor ich meine nächste weitere Fahrt unternehme.

Instead of my subdued green tones, this time I use light blue because I currently have a lot of white and only little blue on my palette, which I want to use up before undertaking my next trip.

    fwbd7,33, Paesaggio con luna piena, celeste, olio su tela, 40 x 50 cm. Dopo tanti anni ho ritrovato piacere a dipingere  altri paesaggi con luna piena. Invece delle mie smorzate sfumature di verdi, questa volta uso il celeste, perchè sulla mia tavolozza c’è tanto bianco e un pò di blu, avanzi di colori che vorrei finire prima del mio prossimo viaggio lungo.

Während ich im Halbschlaf an die Gehstrecke vom Vortag dachte, die ich an diesem Tag gerne wieder gegangen wäre, konnte ich in Wirklichkeit nur zwischen Badezimmer und Bett pendeln. Besonders praktisch an Gina ist, dass sie sich, wenn ich in ganz schlechter Verfassung bin, ganz von selber mit dem kurzen Hinausgehen am Morgen begnügt und den restlichen Tag über einfach schläft, als wäre sie selber krank oder würde einfach einen Ruhetag brauchen. Die Bemerkung der Galeristin, wenn ich es geschafft hätte, die Bilder bis Florenz zu transportieren, würde ich sie wohl auch vom Hotel in die Galerie bringen können, hatte einleuchtend geklungen, aber das schaffte ich dann nicht. Ich konnte mich nur telefonisch entschuldigen, und es blieb diesmal bei der Foto- Version als Platzhalter.

While I was dozily reviewing the route of the previous day, which I would have liked to walk again, I could only move between the bathroom and the bed. Particularly convenient with Gina is that, when I’m in very bad condition, she makes do with just going out in the morning and just sleeps for the rest of the day as if she were sick herself or just needed a day of rest. The comment of the gallery owner that if I had managed to transport my pictures to Florence I would probably also be able to bring them from the hotel to the gallery, had sounded plausible, but then I couldn’t. I only could apologize over the phone, and this time the photo versions remained there.

Ero in un dormiveglia ripensando alla camminata del giorno precedente che avrei voluto rifare volentieri anche oggi, mentre in realtà non facevo che passare dal bagno al letto.  Gina sembra intuire quando mi sento proprio male male: si accontenta di una breve uscita la mattina e dorme il resto della giornata. Come se fosse malata anche lei e avesse bisogno di una giornata di riposo. Il commento della gallerista, che se ero riuscita a portare i quadri fino a Firenze, sarei sicuramente stata in grado di portarli dall’albergo fino alla galleria d’arte, mi era sembrato logico, ma non ne fui capace. Non potevo fare altro che scusarmi telefonicamente. Le foto dovevano rimanere a sostituire i quadri.

    fwbd7,58, Meine aktuelle Fragestellung lautet nach wie vor, wie ich die Sommertage in der Zeit des Alleinseins verbracht habe, und ich erhoffte mir, dass daraus auf die Frage was ich gerne tun würde, eine Antwort entsteht. In einem Sommer, in dem ich in der Nähe von Siena war, um gegen Kost und Logis einen Auftrag auszuführen, hatte ich ständig Sehnsucht nach einem Badestrand, sobald ich einen freien Tag hätte. Der nächste zugängliche Meeresstrand war ungefähr vierzig Kilometer entfernt, und hieß Castiglione della Pescaia. Ich war dort so froh und dankbar, dass mir selbst die überfüllte Strand- Situation gefiel. Auch dass ich einen Liegestuhl mieten musste, war mir egal. Ich verließ meinen Liegeplatz an diesem Tag nur dreimal, für kurze Erkundungsrunden, und von jeder dieser Runden habe ich später ein kleines Bild gemalt.

I was still asking myself how I had spent the summer days when I was alone, and I was hoping this would provide an answer to the question of what I would like to do. In a summer, when I was near Siena to fulfil an order as a return for free board, I always longed for a beach, as soon as I had a day off. The nearest accessible beach was about forty kilometres away and was called Castigione della Pescaia. I was so happy and grateful there, that I even liked the crowded beach. I didn’t mind having to rent a beach chair either. I left my place only three times that day for short rounds of exploration, and of each of these rounds I later painted a picture.

Continuo a chiedermi come avessi  passato i giorni estivi nel periodo di solitudine, sperando di ricavarne una risposta alla domanda su cosa mi sarebbe piaciuto fare adesso. Un’estate ero nelle vicinanze di Siena per una commissione . Lavoravo per vitto e alloggio e intanto sognavo una bella spiaggia dove passare il tempo libero.  L’accesso al mare più vicino era Castiglione della Pescaia, a ca 40 km di distanza. Tanto ero felice di stare al mare, che mi piaceva anche la spiaggia affollata e il fatto di dover noleggiare una sdraio non mi importava. Lasciai la mia sdraio solo tre volte quel giorno per brevi giri di esplorazione, e di ciascuno di quei giri feci un piccolo quadro, più tardi.

Als Lektüre hatte ich nur die Prospekte dabei, die ich mir bei jeder Gelegenheit eingepackt hatte, und bei jeder Ansiedlung stand dort etwas darüber, was alles auf die Etrusker zurückgeht. An einem dieser Tage habe ich eine Skizze von der steilen Dorfstraße gezeichnet. Die Gebäude rechts und links in derselben Farbe wie die Straße wirkten wie aus einem einzigen Steinblock herausgemeißelt. Später habe ich gelesen, dass Castiglione ein Ortsteil von Vetulonia ist, oder umgekehrt, also war ich auch in Vetulonia.

The only reading matter I had were leaflets, which I had picked up on all occasions, and I learned that every settlement in the region went back to the Etruscans. One of those days I drew a sketch of the steep village street. The buildings to the right and left, in the same colour as the street, looked as if they had been carved out of a single block of stone. Later I read that Castiglione was a district of Vetulonia or vice versa, so I was in Vetulonia too.

    fwbd7,60, Castiglione della Pescaia, 3, olio su tela, 30 x 30 cm. Come lettura non avevo altro che i vari depliants che avevo raccattato ovunque andassi. Per ogni borgo davano le origini etrusche. Un giorno feci uno schizzo della ritta salita di un paese. Gli edifici a destra e a sinistra dello stesso colore della strada sembravano scolpiti da un unico blocco di pietra. Più tardi ho letto che Castiglione è un quartiere di Vetulonia, o viceversa, quindi sono stata anche a Vetulonia.

    fwbd7,59, Unsere Gastgeberin hatte an jedem Tag aufs Neue versucht, mich für ihren Tagesplan einzuspannen, der aber so gar nichts mit meinem Malen zu tun hatte. Während sie ständig über Sonne und Strand schimpfte, war es für mich der schönste Teil der Reise, in Castiglione della Pescaia zu sein, vor allem auch, weil sie dort nicht dabei war. Ich blieb so lange am Strand, bis mir das Sonnen zur Arbeit wurde und ich eine Mittagspause davon brauchte.

While she was always ranting about the sun and the beach, it was the best part of the trip for me to be in Castiglione della Pescaia, especially because she was not there. I stayed on the beach, until the sun became too exhausting for me and I needed a break from it.

La nostra oste aveva cercato di coinvolgermi nei suoi programmi quotidiani che non quadravano con la mia pittura, Mentre lei era sempre a criticare il sole e la spiaggia, per me era la parte migliore del mio viaggio, stare a Castiglione della Pescaia, anche perchè non cèra lei. Restavo  sulla spiaggia finchè il sole cominciava a farsi sentire come fatica e mi ci volle una pausa pranzo.
